With a population of about 538,000, Atlanta is the thirty-third largest city in the nation, but the Atlanta Metropolitan Area is the eighth largest in the nation and largest in the Southeastern United States with a population of about 5.4 million residents. Also the capital of Georgia, the city of Atlanta is considered to be one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the country. Atlanta has long been a top business city and transportation hub, being home to headquarters of The Coca-Cola Company, AT&T Mobility, and Delta Air Lines, as well as the Home Depot and UPS in the surrounding areas. Unlike most other Southern cities, Atlanta has chosen not to retain its historic Old South architecture, but rater lead in what the city sees as a “New South” by building expressive, modern structures.

With popular attractions such as the Georgia Aquarium, the World of Coca-Cola, Underground Atlanta, which is a historic shopping and entertainment complex, and numerous museums, Atlanta is the thirteenth most popular tourist destination in the United States. Other iconic sites in Atlanta include Piedmont Park, Zoo Atlanta, and the Atlanta Botanical Garden. The city is also a major entertainment and performing arts city, with major establishments such as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Ballet, Variety Playhouse, The Masquerade, Fox Theatre, Atlanta Institute for the Arts, and the Georgia Museum of Contemporary Art.
